> La Trokita Verde

On February 26, we unveiled our long-awaited eco-food truck. At the ceremony, the Director of Nutrition Services, Josh Goddard, shared the vision and story of this project.
“In the Fall of 2020, No Kid Hungry awarded SAUSD a child nutrition grant that would become the seed of this project. That seed was watered with other grant money and fertilized by a collective and creative spirit. It grew from a simple and fun idea into something much bigger and much more important. It began to sprout purpose.
“As we move forward, we will harvest the fruits of this project by answering a question that started us down this path: how do we create a sustainable, and equitable food system? I believe the answer to this question has two parts. Later, I will speak to the second part, but let us begin by emphasizing the first part. Regardless of what we do to improve our food system, it must be done as a community. It must be reflective of culture. It must honor traditions. It must prioritize health over efficiency, and by efficiency I mean profit. It must be done inclusively. It must be transparent. It must be democratic. This project has been about inclusivity from the beginning. For example, we hosted a student contest to name the truck. Then we hosted a student contest to design the artwork for the truck. We received hundreds of submissions of names and artwork. Both activities were a testament to the overwhelming amount of student talent in SAUSD. To speak more about the truck’s artwork, I would now like to invite Mr. Jesus Martinez Rizo, the artist who helped bring our students’ vision to life, to say a few words.
“Before we celebrate a groundbreaking milestone for the Santa Ana Unified School District with the unveiling of La Trokita Verde. This food truck embodies a vision for the future of food, health, and climate action. With a menu centered on climate-smart, plant-based meals, La Trokita Verde connects students, families, and our community to the power of sustainable eating. Sourced from local, equity-driven farms, this food truck is a rolling classroom, teaching us that what we put on our plates directly impacts our planet. The science is clear—dietary shifts are among the most effective solutions to combat climate change. Research from the EPA, the IPCC, and leading academics underscores that plant-rich diets significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve water, and restore vital ecosystems. By embracing these climate-friendly meals, we are empowering the next generation with the knowledge and tools to create a healthier, more sustainable world. La Trokita Verde is a promise—a promise to nourish our students with delicious, responsible food while safeguarding their future. Santa Ana, let’s lead with vision, with purpose, and with the power of food as our catalyst for change!”
The artist who worked alongside our students to bring their vision to life shared the following:
Mr. Jesus Martinez Rizo, who helped bring our students’ vision to life, talked about the artwork which included the following details:
-
Front of truck
- Consists of a pattern derived from the Aztec Codice Borgia and simulates the scales of Quetzalcoatl
-
Passenger Side
- Consists of an actual re-drawing of Quetzalcoatl on a riverbank to show how big the sculpture is in real life
- Quetzalcoatl was related to wind, Venus, the Sun, merchants, arts, crafts, knowledge, abundance, and learning
- Small lightning bolts were added to the pattern and the text to hint at the truck's electrification. Blue Shores to hint at "Hybridness"
-
Driver Side
-
Consists of an interpretation of a "Coatl - Serpent" Breast Plate that was highly important to the Aztec culture
- The backdrop of the Snake consists of a pattern designed for our purpose with Aztec, food, and snake designs encompassed in the square
-
-
Rear Side
- Consists of a continuation of this idea that the truck personifies a snake of Quetzalcoatl, showing the tail end of a rattlesnake.
